The global mineral resources industry is facing a severe shortage of engineers. The shortage is driven in part by increased consumption of raw materials in developing nations and also by the demographics of the industry. Hence there is demand for continuing education and post-baccalaureate education.

The certificate programs are intended for working professionals changing their duties within companies or those who need a stronger background in a particular segment of the industry. The global nature and fast pace of our industry can make it difficult to return to a college campus for graduate courses.

We have created three certificate programs with the input of our Industry Leadership Board. Each program requires 15 units of graduate coursework with a grade of B or better and all courses are available via distance. Each course is the same as that offered to residential MS and PhD students, taught by professional faculty members.

Upon successful completion of the program, the units may transfer into a master of engineering degree. No GRE exam is required for admission to the program. Applicants who do not have a degree from an English-speaking university must complete the TOEFL (or equivalent) to demonstrate proficiency in English.

We do not require continuous enrollment in the certificate program and students are not required to complete the certificate coursework within a predetermined time frame. However, to transfer the courses into a master of engineering degree, a time limit of 6 years applies.

Academic Background

Enrollment is limited to graduates of accredited engineering bachelor's program and other cognate degrees (such as biology, chemistry, geology, industrial hygiene, physics, MIS, etc.) with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they have the necessary prerequisites completed for the courses in the certificate program.

To be admitted to this certificate program, candidates should have two years of progressively responsible professional experience, preferably in a field related to the specific option selected for study.
