Rock Drilling Competition
The giant rocks outside Old Main on the UA campus, some weighing almost 20 tons, are donated by engineering alums at a local mining company. Mining engineering students then use them for drilling competitions. |

Academic ProbationStudents with a cumulative UA grade point average of less than 2.00 will be placed on academic probation. Students who have fallen below a cumulative UA grade point average of 2.00 in their engineering major will also be placed on academic probation. Students who are not making academic progress in required coursework and are above the University 2.00 GPA can also be placed on academic probation. Students on academic probation must meet with their academic advisor within the first weeks of the beginning of the semester to discuss academic strategies and sign an academic agreement. Students will be notified by UA email when they are placed on probation by either the Academic Dean's office or their major department. The agreement will stipulate the minimum academic progress a student must make in the curriculum of their degree program in order to continue enrollment in the College of Engineering. Additional requirements deemed necessary for improvement can be assigned by the academic advisor. Students placed on academic probation who have earned a D or lower in MATH 122B, 125 or 129 will be required to attend College of Engineering sponsored tutoring sessions in the class they earned the D or lower grade in. The Math Tutoring/Study Group schedules can be found here. Academic DisqualificationStudents must make progress toward an engineering degree in order to continue enrollment through the College, regardless of whether or not they have signed an academic agreement. Students who do not make progress face being transferred out of the the college or college disqualification. Any engineering courses for future terms in which the student is enrolled at the time of disqualification will be dropped. Complete withdrawal from a semester will not necessarily prevent a student's disqualification, as students are expected to make academic progress each semester. Also, if students choose to take courses outside the engineering curriculum to improve their GPA, they may be disqualified from the College of Engineering. Readmission Requirements for Students on Academic Probation or under DisqualificationStudents must apply for readmission through the Office of Admissions and New Student Enrollment. The Office of Admissions and New Student Enrollment will notify the College of the student’s pending application. For readmission to the College of Engineering: After receiving the request for readmission from the Office of Admissions, the Academic Affairs Office will send, either by mail or email, the student a Petition for Academic Review, a letter stating the deadline for completion of the petition and a request for unofficial transcripts from any institution the applicant has attended since leaving the University. The College Readmission Committee will review the petition, unofficial transcripts, and UA course work. If students attend another institution they must show a vast improvement in engineering courses and a GPA of engineering courses of 2.5-3.00 in order to be considered for admission. Students will be notified by mail or e-mail of the committee’s decision. |
